Learn the Basics
Music has 12 notes.
They repeat as we go up in pitch.
12 notes need 12 symbols (and 12 names) to represent them.
The next point is the most important one.
Musical patterns reveal themselves if we split those 12 notes into two groups.
We use the numbers 0 to 5 to represent the first six notes.
We circle them for the next six
and call them:
ess‑oh ess‑1 ess‑2 . . .
Odd-numbered notes reveal our first musical pattern . . .
The three black keys correspond to the three white keys.
Even-numbered notes give us our second pattern . . .
The two black keys in the middle correspond to the two white keys in the middle.
Our last two notes are (0) and 0.
We just learned all the notes for all the keys on the piano — without even trying.
No memorization was required.
This is just a taste of what’s possible.
